East Tosa to be featured on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee

Last year, the 88Nine Neighborhood Project opened our eyes to a whole new production paradigm at 88Nine. From beginning to end, the process was intensely collaborative, which allowed us to present stories that were at times fun, at times moving, and always intimate. Without being overly heavy-handed or high-minded, we took on difficult conversations about community, race, socioeconomics, and many other issues, all within the framework of first-person narratives.

This year, we will use a similar collaborative approach to tracking down stories, but with a new overarching theme. Whereas last year we had an inwards focus (“take care of your block” and “work in your neighborhood”), this year the focus will turn outwards – our listeners will be encouraged to present their neighborhood as well as get out and explore new parts of the city. The tagline of the series, “Love where you live,” will be interpreted in two ways: (I) take pride in your own neighborhood’s rich culture and (II) discover what other Milwaukee neighborhoods have to offer.

As the central part of our campaign, for each of our seven weeks, we will focus on a different Milwaukee neighborhood. The neighborhoods, in no particular order, are Lindsay Heights, Clarke Square, Martin Drive, Havenswoods, Walker’s Point, Harambee, and East Tosa. The audio pieces covering each neighborhood will be tailored to the unique history, culture, and character of each neighborhood.

CASI Chili Event Comes to North Avenue Wauwatosa

Tentatively scheduled for July 24th 2010 Chili’n on the Avenue will put amateurs and professionals head to head in Milwaukee’s only Nationally Sanctioned Chili Competition.

The Chili Appreciation Society International’s mission is to promote chili and raise money for charity. Each year, nearly ten thousand cooks share their chili fun and good deeds with each other, public, and sponsors at 600 CASI cookoffs, throughout the U.S. and neighboring countries. These CASI-sanctioned events raise over a million dollars, annually, for local charities and provide a chance for cooks to qualify for theTerlingua International Chili Championship. Come on in and find out how you can share our fun and charity.                     EastTosa Twitter

Crucial Step Taken in Developing “Road Map” for North Avenue in East Town Tosa

The vision for this area is a progressive urban community intent on combining unique public spaces and commercial experience which interconnect vibrant, established neighborhoods.

The East Tosa North Avenue commercial district has had numerous studies over the years to address specific issues from parking to streetscape, yet it lacks a cohesive, strategic plan or “road map” to articulate the vision. As such, this area lacks a coordinated approach.

East Town North Avenue is one of several neighborhood oriented commercial districts that need some revitalization.

The Grant Task Force, made up of neighborhood residents, area alderman, commercial property owners, area business managers and Wauwatosa Community Development personnel, crafted a Request for Proposal for development of a road map intended to provide guidance in promoting successful business district which more appropriately reflect the character of the neighborhoods through which it passes thereby improving the quality of life in the adjacent neighborhoods that has made Wauwatosa one of the area’s most desirable communities.

The Request for Proposal was issued on November 10th. There is a desire to have consultants secured by early 2010 to begin the planning process.
